Title : A study on the polymer solidification for disposal of powdered radioactive wastes

Abstract:

The roll compaction technology can be used to reduce the physical volume of the powdered wastes. And polymer solidification process can be used to manufacture polymer-solidified body incorporated with high-density pellets. Powdered wastes were converted to rigid pellets of certain shape and size by a lab-scale roll compactor. And then, the characterization of the polymer-solidified body incorporated with pellets was performed to confirm that they met the waste acceptance criteria of the radioactive waste repository.

Audience Take Away Notes:

  • Improving the volumetric capacity of dispersible (particulate) radioactive waste through pelletization technology
  • Strengthening the structural integrity and water resistance of pellet polymer solidification through solidification technology
  • Reduce disposal costs of powdered radioactive waste generated in large quantities

Biography:

Dr. Lim studied Nuclear engineering at the Chosun University, Republic of Korea and graduated as B.S. in 2018. He then joined the research group of Prof. Song at the Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, Chosun University, Nuclear Cycle Laboratory (N-Cycle Lab.). He received his Master's degree in 2020 at the same institution. And then, he received his Ph. D. degree in 2023 at the same institution. He is working as a postdoctoral fellowship supervised by the Prof. Song at the same Lab. He has published more than 3 research articles in SCI(E) journals. He is continuing to conduct research on 'Development of Treatment Technology of Non-Disposal Radwastes for the Increase of Their Volume at Disposal Site'.
