Electroactive polymers

A polymer that changes in size or form in response to an electric field is referred to as an electroactive polymer (EAP). This kind of material is most frequently used in sensors and actuators. A typical aspect of an EAP is that they will experience significant deformation while enduring significant pressures.

(b) A voltage is delivered, which causes the EAP fingers to bend and release the ball.

(c) After the voltage is turned off, the EAP fingers assume their original configuration and grasp the ball.

Historically, ceramic piezoelectric materials have been used to make the bulk of actuators. These materials can endure significant stresses, however, they usually just deform.
