Multiferroics are substances that display more than one of the essential ferroic characteristics in the same phase.ferromagnetism, a switchable kind of magnetization caused by an external magnetic field. Ferroelectricity is a switchable electric polarisation caused by an external electric field. ferroelasticity is a switchable deformation caused by external stress. Multiferroics, which include ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ferroelastic materials, are now most commonly used to refer to magnetoelectric multiferroics that are both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric. Nonprimary order parameters like antiferromagnetism or ferrimagnetism are occasionally added to the formulation. Additional forms of primary order have also recently been postulated, including ferroic configurations of magnetoelectric multipoles, of which ferrotoroidicity is one example. Other than the scientific curiosity about their physical properties. Multiferroics have the potential to be used as actuators, switches, magnetic field sensors, and new kinds of electronic memory devices because of their characteristics.
