Chemical conditions that are not common in other sectors are employed to operate structural materials. In the PWR, for example, the primary water chemistry is characterised by the addition of boron as boric acid (neutronic properties), lithium as lithine (LiOH) to increase the pH (slightly basic environment), and hydrogen against radiolysis (reducing environment), with temperatures between 280°C and 320°C and a pressure of 150 bars. Even the secondary water is odd in certain ways. Crevices (between tube and tubesheet) are also situated on the heat transfer side of the steam generator due to the special design of the PWR steam generator, which uses primary pressurised water inside the tubes and water vapour on the outside side of the tubes. The use of nitric acid that has been heated to a high temperature and is heavily ionised in reprocessing facilities is also quite distinctive. Therefore, specialised research is required to identify alloys that can withstand these conditions.
