A transducer is a machine that changes the form of energy. Typically, a transducer transforms a signal from one kind of energy to another. At the edges of automation, measurement, and control systems, where electrical impulses are translated into and out of other physical values, transducers are frequently used (energy, force, torque, light, motion, position, etc.). Transduction is the transformation of one kind of energy into another. Electrical transducers, on the other hand, transform physical quantities into electrical quantities or signals. Mechanical transducers are so-called because they convert physical quantities into mechanical quantities or the opposite. These are some instances: a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), which measures changes in displacement (position), and a thermocouple, which converts temperature variations into a tiny voltage.
